Summer Shift

As we are entering the second half of 2026 – it’s a perfect time for a summer reset. I was recently teaching on Psalm 77 and discovered some interesting and empowering insights. It’s always encouraging when you see patterns in the Scriptures that will help us to receive revelation and continue to move forward in the purposes of God in our lives.
This Psalm was written by Asaph, who was one of King David’s worship leaders. The context of the Psalm seems to be some kind of severe testing or trial; there is an ensuing battle and Asaph is at his wit’s end. How we respond in seasons like this is absolutely critical, because our response and initiation determine our outcome.
We see Asaph in the beginning verses pouring out his heart and soul to God. This is a very good place to start. (Psalm 77:1-9 TPT)
We can almost feel the anguish of soul Asaph is experiencing as he pours out His heart to God with heartache and brokenness. We sense his utter despair as he even begins to question God and he wonders if God’s heart towards him has changed: Has God left him? Has His mercy run out? Has God’s heart of compassion turned cold towards him? Oh, how we wish we had never been here. The truth is, God can handle our anguish; He can handle our questions…however, we must let the Word answer!
This Psalm has 2 parts: the Problem and the Solution. It’s one thing to be in the Problem, a challenge, a season of waiting and wondering; however, we must not camp there but move forward into the Solution!
One very serious side-effect from being in a season of extended pressure is beginning to shame ourselves or question our worth due to our difficulties. Because of our hardships and heartaches, we can get a wrong perspective of who we are. We need the Word to purify us and to cleanse us from false thinking and restore our true perspective of who we are in Him! (Psalm 77:10 TPT)
I found an interesting verse along these lines in the Gospel of John. (John 5:32 NKJV)
Jesus was faced with a constant barrage of religious persecution and challenges to His Person. It is not even written about the internal challenges, mental torment, or daily demonic onslaught that He faced as He pursued His purpose and mission in the earth; but we know that He was tempted in every way and all things just as we are (Hebrews 4:15). Here is where the shift begins to occur! He said I know Another!!! I KNOW what He says about Me is true!!!
There is a powerful ministry of remembrance and this is what made the shift for the Psalmist in this narrative from the Problem to the Solution. In verse 6: Then I remembered the worship songs I used to sing in the night seasons, and my heart began to fill again with thoughts of you!
Jesus stood strong against intense opposition because He remembered what the Father said about Him. The Psalmist’s heart was filled when He remembered! This is a huge key to our shift! There are 5 mentions of remembering in this Psalm. This is such an important practice for us to employ in order to move from the Problem towards the Solution. We must remember! Just like David when he faced Goliath; he remembered his former victories over the lion and the bear!
Remembering is a powerful practice to realign our hearts with Who God is and what is true about Him in spite of our circumstances! Movement requires that we make a practice of remembering the ways that God has come through for us in the past, knowing He is with us in the present, and that He will provide the Solution for our future!!!
Suddenly, we see Asaph shift from serious introspection and despair to a decisive decision to see the victory of God! Asaph, as an act of his will – remembered!!! (Psalm 77:10-11 NKJV, Psalm 77:13-15 TPT)
Verse 14 in the NKJV reads: “You are the God who does wonders…” (Psalm 77:14a). In the margin of my Bible, I have written: The God of Miracles. In this particular verse there is a declaration that God, in His essence, works wonders! He is the God Who comes through!!
As Asaph begins to reorientate himself to the truth of Who God is, He begins to recall the victory of God in the Exodus event (Psalm 77:16-20). He remembers how God miraculously led them through the Red Sea. What looked like an impossible situation and a devasting end, became an incredible victory and a new season of freedom for God’s people! He recognizes God as the Shepherd Who led the flock (Israel) to victory! We can still count on the provisions of the Shepherd today! (Additionally see Psalm 23)
There is a tremendous shift in this Psalm that we are all invited to live out: We can go from pouring out…to times of questioning…to remembering…to rejoicing in our imminent victory!
Let’s remember that we serve the God of Miracles and experience a summer reset as we remember and experience a shift!!! (Psalm 27:13 NKJV)
